Black Houston Creatives Network, or BHCN, is a professional association, media platform, and creative economy created to increase access, visibility, and opportunity for Black creatives across Houston.
We bring together artists, entrepreneurs, media professionals, cultural leaders, and people who support the creative economy.
Our goal is simple: to help Black creatives build stronger relationships, gain greater visibility, and access the resources and opportunities they need to grow.Whether you are new to Houston, new to the creative scene, or simply looking for a more intentional way to connect, BHCN helps you find your place in Houston’s creative community.

Black Houston Creatives Network exists to cultivate a community-driven ecosystem that increases access, visibility, and opportunity for Black creatives.
We do this through our signature CREATIVES Framework: Community, Resources, Economic Opportunities, Access, Technology, Impact, Visibility, Education, and Sustainability.
This framework shapes how BHCN develops programs, builds partnerships, amplifies creative talent, and creates pathways for creatives to grow their careers, businesses, networks, and influence.
How BHCN Began
BHCN began with a simple observation: Houston is full of talented Black creatives, but too many people are still disconnected from the relationships, platforms, and opportunities that could help them advance.
The talent was already here. What was missing was stronger infrastructure.
What started as a way to bring creatives together has grown into a professional association and media platform focused on strengthening Houston’s Black creative economy.
Today, BHCN creates opportunities for creatives to be seen, supported, and connected. Our work includes networking experiences, media features, artist showcases, educational programming, community partnerships, and initiatives that expand access to creative resources.
As we grow, our purpose remains the same: to help build the kind of ecosystem Black creatives deserve.
our founder
denise n. upshaw, mpa
Black Houston Creatives Network was founded by Denise N. Upshaw, MPA, a cultural storyteller, creative strategist, and former public-sector leader with more than a decade of experience in policy, communications, advocacy, media, and community engagement.
Throughout her career, Denise observed a persistent challenge: Black creatives were shaping culture, launching businesses, building audiences, and contributing to Houston’s economy, yet many lacked consistent access to professional networks, capital, visibility, technology, institutional partnerships, and sustainable opportunities for growth.
BHCN was created to address those structural gaps.
Under Denise’s leadership, BHCN has developed into a professional association, media platform, and creative economy ecosystem guided by its signature CREATIVES Framework: Community, Resources, Economic Opportunities, Access, Technology, Impact, Visibility, Education, and Sustainability.
The framework informs how BHCN designs programs, builds partnerships, expands professional development, amplifies creative talent, and creates pathways to economic opportunity. Through this work, BHCN helps creatives strengthen their professional capacity while helping institutions, businesses, and community partners engage more intentionally with Houston’s Black creative economy.
Denise’s vision is to build more than a network or a series of successful experiences. She is working to establish lasting infrastructure that increases access, strengthens creative businesses and careers, supports cultural preservation, and positions Houston’s Black creatives to thrive locally and compete globally.
